Stillwater All Arts Day

Filed under: Riverview Arts — cgould at 10:29 pm on Monday, June 13, 2011

Ready… Set … ART!

Stillwater Elementary’s 2011 Arts Day took place on Thursday May 19.

“There are no mistakes in art, only opportunities,” said one helper at Arts Day.

Arts Day is a day where there are different opportunities for creativity, such as visual arts, music, dancing, and theater. Each child chooses four activities to attend. Oil pastels, mosaic, clay, and calligraphy are a few of the many classes available. (Due to an unfortunate event, calligraphy didn’t happen this year.)

There were also dances such as Thriller and hip-hop. Or you could attend theater and all sorts of activities with music, including visual music and drumming. Another thing people do, and which looked interesting, was recycled art, taking old bottles, old forks and utensils, cups and similar items to build wind chimes, houses, and lots of other things.

“Clay sculpture was my favorite activity,” said second-grader Ava Powell. “I also liked theater.” Mikaela Ji also said that clay was her favorite activity.

There were other favorites, such as oil pastels, which was Emily Bodenbender’s favorite art project. Gisselle Cano enjoyed Thriller dance. Another favorite of the students was watercolor, which Sophia Beal enjoyed. Brooke Downing loved drawing.

Parent helpers had lots of fun at Arts Day, too. “It was great,” said Ramona Bodenbender. “I had lots of fun helping the person teaching clay.”

Throughout Arts Day, some of the adults were taking pictures, which were shown at a school assembly at the end of the day.

Arts Day was a fun experience for everyone.

We’re all looking forward to next year’s Arts Day!

Carnation Elementary School Selected as the Winner of Schools of Excellence in Arts Education Award!

Filed under: Riverview Arts — cgould at 1:05 am on Wednesday, May 11, 2011

Congratulations to Carnation Elementary School!
This Arts Impact school was recently selected as one of three Washington state winners of the inaugural Schools of Excellence in Arts Education Award.

Children learn through doing and are motivated by being actively engaged in their learning. I have always believed that the arts are the closest extension of natural childhood play and creativity. Rather than stifling this natural curiosity and creativity by our school structure, we strive to nurture it and help it grow.” –Doug Poage, Principal

Carnation Elementary School started working with Arts Impact for their Whole School Training in 2007. The school then created its own teacher professional development through the Arts Impact Replication Program, spearheaded by Carol Gould, the first Arts Impact trained classroom teacher to go on to become an Arts Impact Artist Mentor.

We really are thrilled to receive this award and credit the principal Doug Poage with establishing a culture at the school where arts are encouraged. Carnation also received the School of Academic Distinction award this year. We feel strongly that increased art opportunities and academic excellence go hand in hand.” –Carol Gould, art teacher and Arts Impact Artist Mentor

The Schools of Excellence in Arts Education Award is part of a national program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Schools of Distinction in Arts Education Awards. In addition to receiving state-level recognition, the winning schools have been submitted to The Kennedy Center to participate in their national program. Each school was chosen for its outstanding arts program and recognized for making all components of the arts – dance, music, theater, and visual arts – an essential part of all students’ education.

CarnationElementary2

We believe the arts are an integral and essential component of student learning and child development. We strive to provide an arts enriched curriculum into every subject and component of learning…Over the past five years, we have transformed not only what we teach but how we teach at Carnation Elementary School, working hard to find better ways to engage students in hands-on, minds-on learning…we formed a Creative Arts Team and developed a comprehensive Arts School Improvement Plan (SIP) – (through our work with the Principal Arts Leadership Program – PAL). Through this process we have implemented systemic change in how we deliver instruction, select and train our teachers, and how we utilize our local community resources in the arts, to enhance student learning. Currently, 88% of our classroom teachers (PK-5) have had at least 2 years of intensive arts instruction training through the Arts Impact Program or our district’s replica program, the Riverview Arts Teacher Training Program (RATT). Teachers have had ongoing professional development in methods of using visual arts, dance, theatre, and music in the classroom and they actively deliver this integrated instruction on a daily basis in their classrooms.

To learn more about how Carnation Elementary brings all of the arts to all of their students all year long, you can read their nomination application here.

School Wide all Arts Days

 kids art for newsletter

Our District has a strong commitment to educating the whole child and therefore to the Arts. An all Arts day has been popular at a few of our Elementary campuses for a few years but this year each and every school will be hosting their own all arts day. What began as a good idea has blossomed into a meaningful day for students, teachers, principals, docents and our community of teaching artist who bring their music, improv, pastels, clay,  watercolor and printmaking ink into our classrooms in hands-on  workshops that leave everyone enriched and smiling.

  • Erma – May 5th
  • Carnation Artastic Day – May 12th
  • Stillwater Arts Day – May 19th
  • Cherry Valley will be bringing  in specialists for workshops through-out the month (not on one day) due to construction.

Please contact the arts team lead at one of the  schools  if you are interested in volunteering to help during one of these All-Arts Days.

Arts-Infused Learning

Arts impact 009

Reaching all students, Giving Teachers New Pathways

When Arts Impact began in 1999, the program was founded on key features of successful professional development and education practices: a concept-based approach to teaching and learning, use of performance-based assessments as a shared practice between teacher and student and employing authentic arts integration.

Given the limited amount of time for classroom study based on the wealth of curricula areas in standards-based education, focus on arts-infused learning enables student to identify and apply authentic connections between two or more disciplines and understand essential concepts. 70% of all Riverview teachers have been trained in the Arts Impact model. Foundational arts lessons and integrated arts lessons can now be easily accessessed on the Arts Impact website. http://www.arts-impact.org/lessonplans/
